Zen Buddhist Temple began in Montreal in 1968 and moved to Toronto in 1972. The Temple is affiliated with the Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom, a North American Buddhist order founded in 1967 by Ven. Samu Sunim, Korean Zen Master. The Buddhist Society promotes cultivation of wisdom heart in everyday life for the sake of peace and happiness of all beings, along with formal Zen training and doctrinal understanding. The Temple provides meditation instruction, kido chanting, sutra study and recitation; cultivation of bows and prostrations; and manual work practice, such as woodwork, gardening, writing and editing, and handicrafts. The Temple serves the general public and the Sangha on three levels: one, as a monastery for retreats; two, as a Temple, providing public services and meditation instruction, as well as services for children, weddings and funerals; and three, as a community for Buddhist holidays, observances, festivals and other events.

Biography

Ven. Samu Sunim was born in Korea in 1941. Orphaned during the Korean War, he entered a Buddhist monastery following a period of homelessness. He studied Zen (Son) under Master Solbong Sunim at Pomo-Sa monastery in Pusan. In August, 1967 he arrived in Manhattan, New York City and founded Zen Lotus Society (now Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom). After moving to Toronto in 1972 he completed a three-year solitary retreat before beginning his teaching career. Since that time he has established temples in Toronto, Chicago, Ann Arbor (Michigan) and Mexico City.

    Greetings
I sometimes feel a little envy emerging when I visit websites of Buddhist centers such as yours.I hope the sangha truly appreciates this wonderful opportunity to experience the dharma under the guidance of a respected teacher. If a time comes when you wish to set up another center, perhaps you could include in your thinking,Melbourne Australia.

Always learning, always growing. I have been on quite a journey since I was last at the Toronto temple.

I enjoyed seeing this site and listening to the video. May post this video on my Yahoo 360 blog?

    Peace.

Sunim! Sunim is a wonderful teacher who I miss dearly now that I have moved to Edmonton. After the meditation sessions and his dharma talks on Sunday mornings I would return to the streets of Toronto with a wonderful feeling. I have never tried any of the other meditation centers in Toronto but Toronto Zen Buddhist Temple is certainly a wonderful place.

    Many bows,
    Matt

Sunim is a wonderful teacher. The Temple is truly a place of peace and tranquility. I’m not in Toronto any longer, but still consider this temple my home.

I am looking to join a meditation community again since the brith of my son. He’s 15 months. Do you have any family practice time, or offer any childcare during your Sunday services in Toronto?
    Thanks.

Kendra, I don’t think anyone from the temple looks at this website. If you have questions for the temple, contact them directly using the info at the top of the page.

    Peace,
    Matt
